In Deep with Andy Aledort - How to Play Chicken Pickin'
The first lesson is called “In Deep with Chicken Pickin’ and offers a great primer on the signature techniques and stylistic hallmarks of “hot country” electric lead guitar playing that are based on the popular way of plucking strings using a pick in conjunction with the bare fingers, or just the fingers and thumb, commonly referred to as “chicken pickin’” due to the “clucking” type of sounds it can be used to produce. Andy skillfully demonstrates the mechanics of chicken pickin’ and how it is often used creatively to “choke” strings for a percussive effect, perform banjo-style arpeggio rolls and play “weeping,” pedal steel-style oblique string bends, techniques that are often employed within a single solo or phrase. Examples are offered that are inspired by such legendary pickers like James Burton, Roy Nichols, Roy Buchanan, Redd Volkaert, Danny Gatton, Brad Paisley, Brent Mason and Johnny Hiland. The second part of the DVD is a bonus lesson called “In Deep with Double Stops,” in which Andy presents many of the creative ways that guitarists of all stripes use what are essentially two-note chords in a lead context to craft cool licks in a variety of styles, ranging from country to blues to hard rock and metal, with examples inspired by artists ranging from Chuck Berry, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Johnny Winter, Stevie Ray Vaughan, the Allman Bros. Band’s Duane Allman and Dickey Betts and Jimi Hendrix to Metallica, Megadeth, Judas Priest, John Mayer, Children of Bodom, In Flames, the Black Keys and others.
