Jaco Pastorius, Larry Graham, John Paul Jones. In the 1970s, these three giants of the electric bass had one thing in common: an Acoustic 360 rig at their back. The iconic amp went out of production for much of the '80s and '90s, but designer/builders Harvey Gerst and Russ Allee have teamed up with Acoustic USA's George Grexa to bring "Big Blue" back. We look back at the history of the amp that for many was the go-to for pros looking for arena-filling low end.

On the artist front, we talk songwriting with Billy Talbot of Crazy Horse, symphonic metal with Sean Tibbetts of Kamelot, funk-rock with Mike Merritt, and Stax-style R&B with Zac Cockrell of Alabama Shakes

Get the scoop on Ibanez' new BTB Premium 5-string in the Soundroom, and check out two über-hip Alt DeFacto axes from Fano.

John Goldsby boosts our understanding of the augmented scale in this month's Woodshed, where Ed Friedland examines Chuck Rainey's rock-steady blues grooves. For this month's Transcription, we tackle a true tour de force in the blistering live take of Jaco Pastorius' chops-busting "Teen Town."
