Chapter 5: The Winding Road, Part 1 – How to create a rolling melody using chord tones and passing tones.

In this chapter, Jimmy presents the first half of an original 32-bar bebop jazz-style single-note guitar solo, played over the appealing chord changes to the popular jazz standard, “There Will Never Be Another You,” transposed from the original key of E flat to the more guitar-friendly key of C. The line features an unbroken stream of eighth notes and beautifully demonstrates how to use arpeggios, targeted chord tones, voice leading and scalar and chromatic passing tones to craft a smooth, roller-coaster-like that forms an ideal counterpoint to a root-oriented bass line. In terms of guitar technique, the line also demonstrates Jimmy’s personal backward” alternate picking style and use of pull-offs, both of which greatly faciliate “outside-the-strings” picking and smooth string crossing.
