Chapter 8: Melodic Minor Domination, Part 2 – The conclusion of my tribute to Michael Brecker.

Picking up where he left off in the previous chapter, Jimmy now presents the exciting conclusion of his Michael Brecker tribute solo, again played over the same repeating three-chord progression in the key of E minor and exploiting the use of two “outside-” sounding altered-dominant modes—Lydian-dominant and super-Locrian. Over the course of 16 bars, Jimmy employs the use of upstroke sweeps with upper-structure arpeggios to emulate Brecker’s signature phrasing and sophisticated harmonic thinking and to build rhythmic speed and tension, helping bring the solo to a dramatic climax. He also shows how to smoothly transition from one scale or arpeggio to another in a long, unbroken phrase that climbs into the upper register, using finger slides to faciliate seamless position shifts.
