Chapter 9: Santana, Moore and Brecker, Part 1 – A harmonically intruiguing saxophone-like solo played over a familiar rock ballad chord progression.

In this chapter, Jimmy refences the “Autumn Leaves” chord progression again, but from more of a blues-rock guitar perspective that pays tribute, via an original solo, to two classic instrumental—Carlos Santana’s “Europa (Earth’s Cry Heaven’s Smile)” and Gary Moore’s “Still Got the Blues—both of which happen to be based on the same circle-of-fifths chord progression as “Autumn Leaves.” To tie everything together, Jimmy also lets his Michael Brecker influence shine through, resulting in a soulful, bluesy melody that combines the sophisticated harmonic awareness of a jazz saxophonist with the tone- and technique-mindset of a rock guitarist, using a rich overdriven lead tone and incorporating finger slides, vibratos, hammer-ons, pull-offs and sweeps to skate around the fretboard and craft a sweetly singing fusion-style solo played over an R&B-flavored ballad groove.
