MIX-2015-12 - DEEP RIVER STUDIOS: JOHN DAVENPORT AND HIS NORTH CAROLINA ROOTS
This month, MIX showcases John Davenport and his Deep River Studios in North Carolina. We talk to Davenport about his Walter Mitty-esque career—which took him from North Carolina to New York City to the Bay Area, and then back to North Carolina—and the construction of his dream studio on 10 acres of a 500-acre family farm.
Mix also talks to Michael Romanowski about the move of his Coast Mastering facility to a new space across the Bay Bridge, located inside Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, Calif. A We also talk to sound designer Jon Weston about some of the challenges he faces in doing sound for the Broadway show An American in Paris.
In the Music Section, producer Jake Sinclair discusses recording Panic! At the Disco's latest album, Death of a Bachelor; engineer Gregg Field talks about recording The Count Basie Orchestra’s A Very Swingin’ Christmas; and we do a Q&A with film sound orchestrator Norman Ludwin and music for picture mixer Joel Iwataki.
The Live section presents an All-Access pass to Florence + the Machine, as well as coverage of Brandi Carlile and The Darkness live. And this month's Classic Track tells the story behind Herb Alpert's hit, "Rise."
