MIX-2016-5 - SYNCHRON STAGE: VSL TURNS HISTORIC VIENNA STUDIO INTO SCORE CENTRAL
This month, MIX features Vienna Symphonic Library's brand-new Synchron Stage, where we tour the historic building (and visit its unique organ) and learn about the construction of the WSDG-designed rooms.
We talk with VSL Founder Herb Tucmandl, Managing Director of WSDG Europe Dirk Noy, Synchron Stage Chief Audio Engineer and Technical Director Bernd Mazagg, and film score mix engineer Dennis Sands.
We also talk to Josh Gudwin about how he recorded Justin Bieber's smash album Purpose. Producer/engineer Matt Wallace discusses his work on the latest 3 Doors Down album, Us and the Night.
In the Music Section, engineer/mixer/producer/bass player David Ferguson and his assistant engineer, Sean Sullivan, discuss recording Sturgill Simpson's latest album, A Sailor’s Guide to Earth; plus this month's Classic Track tells the story behind Journey's power-rock ballad, "Open Arms."
The Live section features an All-Access pass to Ellie Goulding, as well as a profile on live venue The National in Virginia. Plus! Check out our guide to mics for instrument recording.
The May Regional section focuses on Nashville, featuring news from Welcome to 1979, The Tracking Room, The Rukkus Room, and Fry Pharmacy Recording, as well as session news from Ocean Way Nashville, The Record Shop, Sound Emporium, Blackbird Studios, Prime Cut Studio, The Bomb Shelter, and OmniSound.
