MIX-2014-11 - Berklee Rising: All-New 10-Studio Boston Facilities

This month MIX talks to Berkee College of Music president Roger Brown, as well as John Storyk, Beth Walters, and Romina Larregina of Walters-Storyk Design Group, about the school's brand-new expansion: a $100-million, 155,000-square-foot, 16-story residence tower in Boston, complete with 10 professional studios.

We also talk to director David Fincher and sound designer Ren Klyce about the sound behind Fincher's latest hit movie, Gone Girl. We cover the rehearsal and opening of La Traviata at Mt. Masada in Israel with mixing engineer Yuval Silberstein, who fills us in on the details of the live setup for this opera.

Then, Artist Rhiannon Giddens of the Chocolate Drops and engineer Michael Piersante talk about recording Lost on the River, an album by The New Basement Tapes--a group composed of artists Marcus Mumford, Giddens, T Bone Burnett, Elvis Costello, Jim James, and Taylor Goldsmith.

Later, The Live section features a tour profile of Pretty Lights and an All-Access pass to Sarah McLachlan. And this month's Classic Track celebrates the 40th anniversary of Linda Ronstadt's "You're No Good," with the story behind the making of this hit.

We also have a guide to iOS apps for console control and a report from AES 2014 in Los Angeles.

Finally, the November issue is our education issue, which features the annual Education Guide 2014 and news from Columbia College, Recording Connection, McNally Smith College of Music, and Georgia State University
